I'm having issues finding a new driver door latch assembly for my 2000 Ranger. I've tried O'Reilly's, Autozone, Advance Auto, Napa, and the Ford dealer. Nobody has or can get one.

Reason I'm looking for one is because the dome light won't turn on when opening the door from the outer handle, but will opening from the inside door handle. I replaced the latch in my Sport Tractor because the dome light wouldn't turn off. Turned out to be the instrument cluster was faulty causing all sorts of issues.

The switch for the dome lamp is in the latch correct?

Thanks for the help.

Yes, the switch is in the latch.

I am surprised the dealer can't get it at all. Not so much with the aftermarket suppliers, but I would think the dealer should still be able to get one.

You might try a Dorman 940-400. It lists as fitting Explorers, 91-2003. I'm not sure why it would fit the Explorer and not the Ranger, should be the same door.

I saw that part number too. I'll see if I can get it from a local parts store, hopefully it will fit.

Advance can get them. The one in the next town over from me shows one in stock.

I ended up ordering it from O'Reilly auto parts. The guy at my local Advance had a severe attitude problem.

Hopefully the Explorer latch will work. Fingers crossed.

Dorman part #940-400 will not work. The part is different.

I did speak to my local Ford parts manager. He asked why I needed a latch. Explained to him that the dome light doesn't turn on when I open the door, he said i just need the door ajar switch that's on the latch. Those are readily available.

So I ordered one of those, and will see if it fixes the issue.

I did not know they were sold separately. That is probably good to know since the latch itself rarely fails but that switch is a common problem.
