I bought a 2001 ford ranger from an impound auction and it didn't come with a key. After drilling the ignition cylinder for hours I finally got it out. I'm stupid and went way too far. Do you think a new cylinder will still work or will I have to get a whole new steering column?

I dont know but i am sure you can make your own start switches instead od replacing the column. Just a hidden couple that you have to have flipped a certain way yo get it to start and run

- If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
Plug a lock cylinder in there and try it. Worst case you can use the new cylinder in the next steering column.

Yes, try it but make sure the pinon/rack still work as they engage the true ignition switch. This may help:

lock cylinder failure

I'm curious why you needed to drill it out. I just replaced the tumbler on an Explorer and all I needed to do was remove the plastic covers, then press the release pin for the old tumbler to slide out; it was the same mechanism on Rangers (through 94, have not worked on any newer) and BRONCOIIs.
