Hey guys and gals,

I am ion the process of converting my al4d to a m50d... My question is I an looking into building a doubler t-case I have read both of the tech swaps regarding converting the electric over to the doubler and also converting the manual over. I happen to have one of each and am wondering which one would be better (easier) to convert? I realize the insides are the same I'm just concerned about fabricating a way of shifting them in and out of two low. Any help would be greatly apreciated...

You can't convert an electric case into a doubler. There is no way to shift it. You can run an electric case as the rear case connected to the doubler. Shifting the case can be accomplished with the existing shift motor or a lever attached to the input.
 
that's not true, the original doubler article here was done using an electric-shift 1354 case.

You just have to be a bit more creative in coming up with a way to shift it is all.

I would agree however the manual case is much more straightforward though.
 
Is there anyway those of us with the 1354 Electric shift tcases can set up a lever shift type setup and get rid of the shift motor all together effectively turning the t-case into a 1354 Manual?

Yeah, if you can figure out a way to shift an electric case it would definitely work....but good luck. It's not easy.

I saw a couple posts down someone ask the same question basically and you talked about havin to come up with a way to make the shaft rotate 270 degrees or something.....

Enlighten me.....

Reason I'm asking....(and not to hi-jack the post at all but rather help ALLLLLL the 1354 electric t-case guys out there).....is cuz' I have the 1354E in my truck. I bought a first gen. Explorer Sport witha M5OD in it that I am going to attempt to swap into my Ranger in place of the 4 times rebuilt A4LD that's there now.....well I came across a BW1350 Manual and figure, why the hell not set up a doubler at the same time? I'd like to be able to set it up so both T-cases are manual and if there is a way to economically convert the 1354E I have into a manual, I'm all on it cuz' the prices on the 1354 manuals are going up a lil bit.....Either way, I plan on cuttin up the 1350 but I'd still like to run the 1354 behind it. This is why I ask about convertin the electric to a manual. This is why I'm askin you Junkie to explain in yur oh-so-understandable detail about how you are thinking of possibly being able to go about this conversion....

There is no reason that you can't run your 1354E behind the 1350, as a matter of fact, some doubler kits (the Stubler specifically) recommend it.

Wow.....u serious?:icon_surprised:.....I understand that dude........what I am getting at is this doubler creation is an awesome setup and all, with one little drawback, if you want double manual tcases and want a 1354M in the back, it's getting sort of tough to find one. I am just looking at that and the fact that there are a ton of electric tcases out there not being utilized in a lot of instances since they are electric. A lot of wheelers (myself included to a certain degree) arn't crazy about having a lot of electric sh!t on our rig and if there is a somewhat easy way to do this conversion, then I'm all for it.

Junkie's cable and spring idea seems like it would work pretty well. If someone did a writeup on how to do it, that would be a pretty popular one.
 
I've never actually tried doing it myself, but you'd need some kind of pulley drum, maybe 2" dia. that can be attached to the end of the shaft, then you'd need a small spring behind it (coaxially around the shaft) that would wind the pulley back to 2WD.
Attach cable, and pull to shift to 4WD (or Lo). Release cable, spring will return it back to 2WD.

There is no internal detent on the shaft for the 4HI position, so you'll need rig up something to hold it in that position when you need it.
 
im not very good with photshop, but if someon coul follow my logic on this, if it turns 270 degrees, why not fabricate a system that would esentially put a pully affixed to the end of the shaft(and welded) but this would have to be a fabrociated pully to hold up, having it protrude about 1" from the back of the case, then measure out ur 270 degrees on ur newly fabricated pully and mark the proverbial 2wd and 4 low positions(270deg out from eachother) THEN, drill a hole at ur first mark on the front of the pulley to accept a 1/2" grade 8 bolt, then attach a fabricated shifter to the pulley with this method (piece of 1" flat stock will work for the shifter) this provides u with a accepable method to shit the electric t-case.

now for the tricky part, this is where we run into the problem of not bein able to put it into 4 high and keep it there this will us a VERY simple principle, u will have 3 dimples on the backside of the pulley(one to indicated each position) u will have a bolt gently pressing on the pulley(rounded on the tip to allow it to glide and come in and out of dimples with some effort) then u have a manual shifter with some ingenuity, it will click into each positon and u wil simply use a up and down motion to shift the case, down and to the drivers side will be 2wd, up near the top will be 4 hi, and down and to the passenger will be 4 low.....


sorry if its a bit hard to follow, i have it thought out in my head perfectly, this would naturally come up in about the middle of the truck, between the seats and just to the edge of the drivers seat, may even be able to have center console in with it, idk for sure, id have to actually fab one of these up

hopefully the concept would work, hate to think i actually used my brain for nothing

Another point to consider is that the drivetrain moves around under load and what not.

i had thought about that, maybe a small heim joint would be in order on the shifter where its attached, that way itll move and flex without any complaints...
