I have a 86 ranger and a 87 ranger. The 86 is a extended cab automatic trans two wheel drive. The 87 is a standard cab manual trans 4 wheel drive. The tag on both doors tell me the they are both "84" gear ratio. The "type" letter before the 84 on the 86 is a "T" and the 87 is a :D:. I am going to pull the axle out of the 86 to rebuild and recondition to put in the 87. Will the letter make any difference?

Uh, no. The trans code will not make a difference in the axle.

Sorry, I should have given some explanation. I was pointing out that you could figure out your axle ratio. As far as "type", I believe that refers to body ie; supercab, extended cab, reg. cab, shortbox, etc.
I don't know of a decoder for that, tho there may be one out there.

Do they all have a vent tube on them. There is one on my 4 x 4. I have not looked at my other truck.

I believe that all trans would have a vent tube. It's for allowing gases somewhere to go during heating/cooling [expansion/contraction] of the trans fluid. Same for front and rear axles.

Good, I want to vent everything that allows me to and as high on the truck within reason. I would like to know that I can go thru a water crossing and not get water in areas when water should not go. I am not planning to go thru water any higher than the bottom of the cab.

You'll notice that they point down from the factory. That will act like a snorkel and not allow water in. You can do the same using fittings or just making the opening face down.

Pulled the bed off of the doner truck. The vent tube on it went up to the frame rail. The truck I am building must be from the mid west, rust all over. The doner truck is a California truck.
