Don't 4wd on pavement?

because there are clutch plates that will slip under heavy load, hence the term limited-slip. a detroit locker has clutches that release too, a spool doesnt and under the right conditions you could break a axleshaft. (like cornering with a heavy load)

the transfer case makes a 1:1 solid connection between front and rear. When you turn, or have slightly different tire diameters (different pressures even), the front driveshaft will try to spin at a different speed than the rear, and the friction between tire and pavement will not allow the tires to slip and relieve this.

AWD transfer cases use a viscous coupling that allows different speeds front vs rear.

So why doesn't posi-trac (true positrac)bind up and get all shot to shyt?

I asked because I'm buying my first 4x4 - a usie - and I am nowhere near any dirt roads but obviously I need to shift the vehicle into 4H/4L to test to make sure the gears all work properly.

Is a minute or two of driving in 4wd on the pavement going to hurt anything?

No, you'll be fine. Just limit the amount and degree of turning that you do. That's really what it's all about.

When your turning, the front tires are traveling a different distance that the rear tires. That's why the binding occurs.

I dont want to high jack the thread but what about using 4 wheel drive with snow on the road?

I suggest putting it in 4hi and crawl under the truck (with it off, and with the parking brake on) and make sure the front driveshaft won't turn. Repeat for 4lo.

while i was workin at a walmart tire lube express, a lady came in for an oil change and asked if we could check her power steering fluid because she was having trouble steering. (it was a newer jeep liberty) She complained that it felt like the front tires were grabbing and the front end was jumpy. A quick look inside showed the transfer case in 4x4. A quick push of the lever an her problem was solved. Probably the only time the lever was or ever will be touched.
