taking the 5 speed out of my 87 b2 and putting it in my dads 89 with an a4ld what parts do i need, will i need to grab drive shafts? i know ill need the computer but other than that what?

You will need the manual transmission pedal assembly for that year of truck. I honestly think that will be the worst part to install.

yeah, in this case you will need drive shafts. do you have the donor truck?

You won't be able to use the 87 computer without getting a fuel pump code.

The wire harness should be different the tranny harness is part of the engine harness so you'll need to to some splicing. Should have a slave cylinder powerd 5 speed so you may need to install a fliud reservior.

you will not need drive shafts and the cross member is the same also
i just finished the same swap in my truck but it all depends on witch 5 speed you are using the best is the fm146

but the 87 has an fm145... about 2 inches shorter than the a4ld. so yes, he will need the matching drive shafts.

your swap was with an fm146, a transmission thats the same length as the a4ld that you pulled out... which is why you didnt need drive shafts.

btw, the *best* 5 speed to swap in is unarguably the mazda m5od, the transmission that went into my truck after my fm145 took a shit.

are you sure i have seen them with all thee (fm145, fm146, and the mazda
M50D-R1) so many were changed by service stations that just got one from the salvage yard and didnt care witch one it was

Well... he means stock, it comes with the fm145, most repaire shops wouldn't go through the process of moving the tranny crossmember back a few inches to put the fm146 in. Nor would most owners want to pay the labor for that to happen as for the m50d with it being the 5speed tranny for the 4.0 yes it will bolt up to the 2.9 but as before having a fm145 the m50d is the same length as the fm146 and the cross member would half to moved back, and not only would you run into the same issues as before but unless the shop is extremly ranger educated they probly wouldn't know that the m50d would bolt up to the 2.9. So most likly he's be pullin the fm145 and cross member is gonna need to be moved about 2 inches, unless he puts in the fm146 or m50d. :icon_thumby:
