I am thinking about getting a fullsize truck as towing anything kind of large with a ranger could be scary. I was thinking about a f150 with the 300 6, 5 speed, 4x4 and extended cab. I haven't found one that has all those features yet, so I'm not quite sure if Ford ever made such a thing?

Yep, they sure did. My buddys' neighbor has one that we changed the clutch in about 5 months ago. It is a 91 model, black with red interior, manual Xcase, work truck . Long bed too.

yep my old man has one as well....i think its a 89?

Pretty popular truck actually, made good workhorse's with decent fuel economy when compared the the 351's. I've seen a few around here as well.

Yes, they did make 'em....

But some areas do not seem to have them at all for sale... like where I live.... every extended cab fullsize I've seen has a 351 or 460, with a rare few equipped with a 302 or diesel. Most newer extended cabs around here have diesels. But my one buddy a couple hours north of me says there's extended cabs with the 300 all over the place.

IMHO, if I was gonna do towing on a regular basis I'd be looking for a diesel. Actually, if I had some money to spend I'd be looking for one now..... but that's another story.

It probably won't be a regular basis, it seems like I might only have to move something large enough that I have to trailer maybe 5 or 6 times a year.

the 300 is definatley torquey enough to tow some decent stuff from time to time. sure its no diesel, but its insane reliability rivals one. and i guess economy should be good too. atleast better than a 351.

as for a gasser, i prefer the 300 I6, especially the EFI models

Near as I can figure, I'm getting about 16 mpg around town out of my F-150... might help if I get some deeper gears in it though... IMHO the 3.08 gears that are in mine would be fine if it was just a weekend warrior truck or transportation with an empty bed. Loaded with tools it doesn't seem to like it much, still goes good, just I find myself in third gear a lot.

I had an 87 F-150 Reg. Cab Long Box , 300 I-6 , 4x4 , Manual Tcase , C6 auto and a set of 35's , she wasnt bad , but i had a few issues with her , but the previous owners didnt care for her all that well

my buddy has a 78 F-250 , Reg Cab Long Box , 300 I-6 4x4 , with a 4 speed and manual Tcase , she sure is a purty truck , i will have to get pics

300 i 6 f150 was fords best truck fuel millage 15 to 17 and will run for ever

Ford flooded the market with them in 95. super cab 4x4 5spd 4.9L I-6 short bed XLT.

guess they were trying to get rid of their production run 300's before the change to the 4.2L

There is a late 80s 2wd long bed extended cab that used to go by here quite a bit--sometime pulling a 30' yellow gooseneck with junk on it--slowly, but pulling it. It's sitting in a field now but I always liked that truck.

I'd rather have a 460 for pulling on the highway, but a 300 for just beating around--less moving parts, easier by far to work on the engine. The only thing I hate about V engines is working on them.

With either 235/75-15's, 31x10.5-15's (or the metric 265 equivelent) the "happy combination" for a 4.9 powered F-series seems to be 3.55's

IF OTOH you are working on an F-250 and running proper tires
235/80-16's 4.10's are a better choice.

With 3.08's in an F-150 5th is essentially useless.
