Hey everybody, my (88 2.9 4x4 auto) truck died partway to work today, so I walked home and drove my trusty 280z instead...grrrr. (not that I don't like my z, I just needed the truck today). The truck gets really nice fat spark, and it had started up perfect, idled smooth, accelerated great then just plain old died. Dead. Nothing. (crank, but no fire) Seems to be getting fuel, as the frame pump runs, and it squirts at the rail, but my main question right now is whether or not the ignition system is good if it gets spark...could a bad TFI throw timing off or something? I checked timing last month and it was dead on.

You can test timing while cranking. It's a Hall effect sensor, not a VRS. It acts very much like points.

I suppose a noisy TFI might generate extra sparks, but I've never heard of that actually happening.
