The emergency brake on my 04 Edge 2wd easily goes all the way to the floor when I push it in. On my old 1990 Ranger, it was adjusted so that I only pushed it about 3/4 the way down for it to be set. This is how it was on my 86 Bronco too.

On both those older trucks I remember there was an adjusting device on the cable underneath between the driver's door and the rear wheel. It would control the tension on the parking brake cable. I cannot find anything like it on my 04, did Ford stop putting these on the cables?

I will try to tackle my rear brakes again soon. last time I was able to get the new pads on, but could not get the drum back over them, despite having the adjuster all the way in. Someone had suggested that my parking brake cable was frozen, but it does not seem so. Any sure way to check this without removing the cables?

yes there is a way to check parking brake cable. it will be best to check the next time your replacing the rear brakes, when u get everything out i would have a friend set and release the parking brake while u watch to see if it moves in and out at the rear drum assembly, if u do not see movement and your friend is able to set and release the parking brake it means the cable is broke. now it u do not have time nor the money at the time of to fix right off hand, and the brake drum will not go back on u can spray something like pb blast in the line and try to push the cable back in so the parking brake is not in the on position

Thanks Tader, will do next time I get to work on the brakes again. I think my wife just volunteered herself. She always wants to help anyway.
