Does anyone know the smallest current diesel engine for trucks in production?

To mate it to a tranny. The motor mounts are the easy part....

That's kinda what I figured, but thought I would ask anyway. What transmissions can you adapt to? I've heard of a few non-Ford transmissions that could use a adapter, have you heard of an adapter to go to say, an M5OD-R1?

I can get you a schematic to make an adaptor for a 1.9VW to a 5-speed from a 'Yota with a 22re. You can also buy that adaptor pre-made. I've also seen a Wrangler with a 1.9, pretty sure it was with the Jeep's tranny. I've also seen a 2wd Ranger with a 1.9 that gets 50mpg.

I'm also fairly certain a 1.9 TDI can be mated to an M5OD with a bit of fabrication and figuring - adaptors are not that complicated. Not sure about a clutch, though, that might be the interesting part.

I think the clutch wouldn't be too bad to figure out, most of the componentry is on the transmission side, the trick is finding the correct pilot bearing and getting the flywheel from the M5OD-R1 to mate up to the engine.

4BT from a bread truck is more common than the others, and has been had with success. You will also have build threads to reference.

if you want a totally doable (in terms of weight and fit vs power output + cool factor), look into the 4banger turbo toyota diesels. i think theyre kinda hard to find in the states but my uncle swapped one in his t100 and shit that things got plenty of power, and its seriously small, would fit in a ranger no problem. plus its a toyota so itll last pretty much forever lol

ill try to get some more specifics...

Just to pipe in with another option. If you can find one, there are the Isuzu 4cyl diesels in the LCF trucks. The 3.9L is a older one, the 4.8L came next, and the newer ones are a 5.2L. These engines are turbo charged. Also, they are fairly simple in their design. The newer ones are all electrical and you would not be able to replace injectors by yourself though. They need to be programmed at an Isuzu dealership. The others are mechanical so no extra programming. They also did have a manual transmission options, although I have not seen very many of them so they might be a little rare. Just another option.

Just in case anyone does not know, the Duramax engine in the Chevy pickups is made by Isuzu. I do not have any experience with them in a pickup, but I have worked on them in the medium duty trucks. They seem to be fairly good engines from what I have seen of them. The 4cyl are fairly peppy, but do have their issues as well though.

Tell that to the '97 Tacoma that we snapped in two with 600lbs in the bed.
They had a recall on problems like that, they either bought them back for 150% of blue book value or swapped a frame into them

the 3.9 liter 4BD Isuzu is the most common of the 4 cylinders to be swapped, they also made a 4HE1TC 4 cylinder But I know the starter location on those to be a huge issue in swapping (it would end up right behind your gas pedal)
