Just started this hobby. all you need is a GPS and a pencil.
http://www.geocaching.com/about/default.aspx
just found out there are a gillion in the indianapolis area, a couple in the same neighborhood that I live in, and several within a mile.
you get the coordinates from the above website (gotta sign up, but its free.) enter them in your gps and go! once there you look for the container, which can be anywhere from a smaller than dime size 'nano' to a 5 gallon bucket. some have loot or 'swag' in them that you can swap out for stuff of equal or more value, some have 'travel bugs' which you can take out and place in another cache. all have a logbook that you sign when you find it. (the little ones just have a strip of paper rolled up inside)
there are geocaches on every continent. some are easy to get to, some need special equipment such as scuba gear, rappelling ropes or a 4x4.
nice thing about this hobby is that the entire family can enjoy it.
