Just started this hobby. all you need is a GPS and a pencil.

http://www.geocaching.com/about/default.aspx

just found out there are a gillion in the indianapolis area, a couple in the same neighborhood that I live in, and several within a mile.

you get the coordinates from the above website (gotta sign up, but its free.) enter them in your gps and go! once there you look for the container, which can be anywhere from a smaller than dime size 'nano' to a 5 gallon bucket. some have loot or 'swag' in them that you can swap out for stuff of equal or more value, some have 'travel bugs' which you can take out and place in another cache. all have a logbook that you sign when you find it. (the little ones just have a strip of paper rolled up inside)

there are geocaches on every continent. some are easy to get to, some need special equipment such as scuba gear, rappelling ropes or a 4x4.

nice thing about this hobby is that the entire family can enjoy it.

oh yea its great.. i've only done a few. if you have an iPhone, get the groundspeak app.. the free version is okay but of course the costly one is better. its fun to do with a group of people... the iPhone almost makes it to easy tho...

i take my laptop(full usb gps with live location and turn by turn) on everyroad trip and try to find some geocache spots. ive hit a few places that i wasnt too enthusiastic about solo wheeling to and had to take a good hike. its pretty cool.i found one of the 4wheeldrive mag's 'caches once, got a 50 dolla 4wheel parts gift card and liscense plate:icon_thumby:

I stumbled on one in a civil war cemetery. I didn't find it too overly respectful being it was placed there, but it is a cool spot. Very peaceful and really out of the way. I wrote a note when I found it and my objections to it being right there. The hill it was placed is actually a solders mausoleum and it has been failing over the years. Any sort of traffic on it could cause a collapse of the officers tomb. I moved it off the mound, and placed it in sight of where I found it, at the base of the tumb. I haven't been up there in about a year or more, but I hope the people that do this sort of thing paid attention and are more respectful in the future.

I did it for a long time, then I got this Tanker job....:(

i wanted to start doing this over summer but got really busy with work and totally forgot about it until you posted this

me and a couple buddys randomly found one in the woods once, its was a 1 gallon bucket, had a bit of stuff in it and a log book ,, i never bothered with them though

I could do it since the Garmin GPS60 has the software for it. But I never tried it.

i would if i had gps. I found one by accident looking for a cave once.

that sounds cool, me and the wife may have to give it a try on the next road trip.

I cache been a member there since 07.
Found them in several states.
