Does a Powerchip really work?

Will adding a power chip to my ford ranger really give it more horsepower cause ive seen that it gives up to 60 hp and how does a powerchip actually work?

my brother put one in his ranger and claims he felt some difference and got an extra mpg. other people say it ruined their performance. you get what you pay for

i have heard both good and bad from them, but seeing as i see alot for sale on craigslist and stuff or know people that are bonifide exaggerators and idiots that install them and say they are good, I'm going to go with no they aren't good. if you want performance i have heard of alot of other things you can do to increase performance in the 3.0L
