Do Ranger auto trans run hot?

On a 4r/5r you can add as big of a cooler as you want because no matter what the fluid flow to the cooler is controlled by a thermostat. It will always keep the fluid at the minimum temp set by the thermostat and only allow fluid to flow through the cooler when it reaches that temp. (Same way the cooling system on the engine works). I do not know if the A4LD has a thermostat switch.

I have no electric controls on my A4LD any more.... So I doubt there is a thermostat switch...

Actually I take that back, I can still lock the torque converter with a switch, but that's it.

If 5r55e internal stat is 165f, I will probably set my 2 transcooler fans at 170f & 175f.

I don't know exactly the temp its set at. I'm just basing that on the fact that my trans temp never seems to drop much below 165 once it's warmed up. I can haul 1,000 pounds up hill in the dead of summer, or putz around town in the freezing cold and it just stays around 160-170. Next time I get a chance I can hook up forscan and set the PID for the thermostat switch and see exactly when it turns on.

Seeing simular 160~165f lower limit here on 5r55e after warmed up.
Do update this thread after you've reconfirmed your tranny temp.
Thanks.

Turns out installing a second oil cooler is almost a bolt in, all you need is a second OEM oil cooler, four 3/16 x3/8 or 5/16 long pop rivets, some good 3/8 hose and two 3/8" hose tees. (seems they work best plumbed in parallel rather then in series, so I'v read ) I ordered two 3/8 brass tees from Amazon for 7 bucks.
First you need to drill out the four rivets (3/16" drill bit) from the top of your new oil cooler, being careful not to go to far and drill into an oil passage. Flip the bracket over and pop rivet it into the other four holes already on the other side of the cooler.

(above) there's a hole (at least on my '03) that's perfect to bolt the top bracket to.
(yellow arrow. pic below) drill two holes for the original or new metal screws for the bottom bracket, it's behind the cross member and a PItA if you don't have a right angle drill.....

Everything seems to fit fine, so far, even looks OEM.

Very nice clean installation. :icon_thumby:

@Otis413
Excellent.
Near identical plan here;
I'm rotating each TransCooler 90degrees so HoseBarbs point inward to the parallel HoseTees.
Keep us updated on what temps your tranny runs before & after this mod.
Thanks.
