Just a reminder. Best to not wear gloves while operating rotating machinery!

Was running my 4" angle grinder with a paint stripper pad. I released the on/off switch with my right hand and set the grinder back down on the bench. Danged glove thumb caught in the rotating pad as it spun down. Ripped up the glove and thumb. Oh ouch!

I was able so far to close the wound up with disinfectant and band-aids but bet this throbs tonight! I should have known better.

I always wear gloves when running a grinder.

I was wearing mechanic gloves when I sliced into my thumb…

I caught my hand with a wire wheel when I was cleaning up my front axle before I swapped it in.

I think good gloves would have helped.

Maybe the key is to wear the right type of gloves and make sure they fit properly. Good leather gloves will protect against abrasion. Big, bulky gloves may be more prone to getting caught. Most of the time, if I'm grinding, I'm also welding. So I'm wearing thin leather welding gloves. Not likely to change that habit.

Welding Gloves

Those are bulky AF but I've seen a guy grab a 4.5 inch grinder by the cup brush with them and hold it at rotor lock.

Those are definitely not what I was talking about when I said "thin welding gloves". But those will protect against abrasions.

Nothing thin about them.

they make gloves for grinding. has spark/cut protection, usually cut resistance rating. They look like welding gloves. available at welding supply shops like Airgas. The grinder kinda bounces off if grazed, doesnt snag and twist up like some gloves. I have a set, they work good. I think Tillman makes em.

Tillman makes very good gloves. Well worth the money.

All good advice, and don't neglect the rest of the PPE either. Last summer I was stripping some wheels with a wire wheel, wearing gloves, safety glasses and... shorts. My grinder has an intermittent trigger unless you lock it on. The wheel grabbed something, yanked it sideways in such a way as to lock itself on, at which point it pulled itself out of my hand, hit the ground at full throttle, then launched itself into my knee. Then it continued skittering down the driveway until it mercifully managed to yank the power cord out. 😂
I have pictures but I'll spare you all. It was 3 or 4 days I was ready to go to the hospital, really nasty.
Needless to say, I've never been injured using a grinder in the last 30 years and that's not the injury I've been waiting to happen! So, just like your shop teacher told you, visualize all the ways a tool can kill you before you turn it on, and wear _all_ the protective gear.

Did you say PPE?
