I've replaced the head gaskets on my '94 Ranger 4.0 twice now. All I can say is make sure you go ahead and get the new head bolts. When you torque them down to spec it stretches the threads a little bit and they never seat quite the same again. Also get a thread chaser and clean out the threads in the block for the head bolts, then blow out any residual debris/oil/water. Notice I said I had to replace the gaskets twice... not getting new bolts, and not cleaning out the threads didn't allow the heads to fully seat the first time and I blew a couple water jackets within 20,000 miles. The 2nd set I put in, with new bolts... 65,000 miles and counting.
Intake bolts should be fine. I didn't even attempt to remove the exhaust manifolds, I was afraid of twisting those bolts off, so I just disconnected the manifolds from the exhaust pipes and left them attached to the heads. One less gasket to worry about too.
Good luck, any other questions you have I'll try to answer.
