im sure some of you have seen my thread in the transmission section of the forum. i had tranny problems with the truck when i first got it but that is all fixed as far as i know. i went out wheelin in the snow yesterday and got stuck and proceeded to try to get out by going back and forth between reverse and drive and in and out of 4 wheel drive, in the midst of trying to get unstuck i kept hear gnarly clunking noises when i would shift between reverse and drive, the clunks i heard were also jerking the truck so i thought it could be the trans.
anyways it got to the point where my truck would rev out and i would go no where. i took it out of 4 wheel drive and the truck started spinning the rear tires again. i then put it into 4 again, locked my hubs, and got nothing from the front wheels. the lights were on on the dash indicating that itwas in 4x4 but it definitely wasnt. and at this time there was no longer power to the rear wheels either. i checked my trans fluid and it is low and as of right now i havent topped it off, its christmas and everything is closed lol. any way i still had and do have reverse and park. but the truck will no longer move in overdrive, drive, 2, or 1. everytime i press the button to put it into 4, i keep hearing weird "clicking" noise i guess you could call it. dont know what this means but this is why i am here posting this. also when its in drive and i rev it it feels like the truck wants to go but it feels like something is holding it back. any advice would be much appreciated thank you.

Your transmission is shot. Happened with my grandfather's 93 ford ranger twice. The auto trannies in these newer rangers past about 87 are nothing but trash. Not sure of the damage other than a rebuild of the transmission, eventually you'll lose reverse as well.

Thanks for your input. i hate these auto trannies. owning this year ranger with the a4ld has made me despise automatic transmissions lol. looks like the 5spd swap will be happening sooner than planned!

I had a 1984 Ford Ranger 4x2 that I was given by my grandparents when they bought a larger truck and travel trailer which had the C-5 3 speed automatic transmission and they towed a 16' travel trailer all over the country and never had a problem. The issues on transmissions started when they became electronically controlled it seems like. I currently have an 84 Ford Bronco 2 4x4 with the 5 speed transmission and I love it, never complained about the ranger I had either.

The automatic transmissions in newer vehicles just seem like junk anymore.

Personally I feel the 5R55E in my 97 is a very solid transmission for an Auto. Of course mine has been a single owner well maintained vehicle so that could be why I hav eno issues with it. I have pulled pretty good size trailers with the truck. I have had it loaded with stone and sand. I will say the transmission acted a few tiems like it was in neutral 2 times in the last 15 years, No clue as to why it did it but it has not done it since those 2 times.

my truck has 190, xxx miles on it and i beleive i am the first owner to actually mai tin and fix and take care of the damn thing. i heard the the a4ld's that they made for the 4.0 v6 are the better of the a4ld, but i dont get thag bevause isnt it all the same for the 2.3 and 2.9? lol anyways i cant wait to put the m5OD 5spd in this thing. also going to try to swap to a manual transfer case so i dont have to deal with the electric actuators and stuff. anyone know if thats possible?

Allow me to correct this post.

The auto transmissions between 1986 and 1995 were trash.

The C-series and the 4R/5R transmissions were pretty good, except for the 5R55W in the Explorers, those had some issues.
