Do I Have a,,,,, 4r44e ( OR ) 4r55e

According to auto zones computer my EXACT truck comes with ( 2 ) different types of transmissions, I am going to do a tranny fluid change / filter gasket.

I should probably already know the answer to this but HEY we can't all know EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING all the time

I am willing to bet my truck does NOT come with ( 2 ) different transmissions but I am double checking with you all!!

Also according to their computer a COMPLETE flud change requires 9.8 quarts and a SERVICE fluid change requires 3 quarts and since I am just dropping the pan I am assuming I just need 3 quarts.

According to their computer BOTH the 4r44e and the 4r55e take the same amount of fluid.

my truck is a 1996 Ford Ranger super cab ( stx ) with an automatic transmission and a 4.0 engine also I had Ford put a new tranny in 3 years ago.

on a '1995-96 4.0 you'd have a 4R55E.

the "55" was used on 4.0's the "44" is for 2.3/3.0 Rangers.

The first time I had Goodyear do mine (many years back) and they just looked at the bottom of the trans to see which filter I needed. The techs know their stuff. I did not know which type of trans I had when they asked me!!! I thought there was only one as well, Bro!! The tech looked at my trans and said which filter to order to the parts guy.

I would buy at least 4 quarts for a filter change. My trans took about 4 quarts to fill when I changed mine.
