Ditching cable / satellite - TV on the road

DATA...DATA...DATA...

I recently moved and had to get my own internet connection...that I thought was supposed to be relatively inexpensive...and it is...if you don't download anything.

I have been waiting for nearly two weeks for an install completion...the tech was here for three hours yesterday and could not get it working...

In the mean time I have been using my phone as a hotspot...and originally had a 500 Mb plan that I never even approached the limit on in over two years...I have since chewed up about 3 Gb of data in less than a week and I'm being very conservative...

WTF is going on in the world of the internet...I'm pretty much restricted to only TRS type of internet activity because anything else chews up my limited data...at least until I can get this internet connection working...

Fortunately, I've been with the same provider for my phone for five years and they've been bumping my data for a very small increase in my monthly charge...but it is creeping up to the "unaffordable" level rapidly...

So...any ideas on how to minimize these things other than running out to local libraries and wifi shacks to download stuff to watch later???

Streaming music isn't too bad, but no need to stream "hi-res" music, switch to standard.
15 hours of "hi-res" music = 1GB data
25 hours of standard music = 1GB

Same for video streaming, the lower the resolution the less MBs/GBs are used, most "defaults" are set for "hi-res", like they get a cut of a providers mobile or land line data cost, lol, they don't............I don't think.

So change resolution, if you aren't watching a show on a 60+" screen then you are a "content" guy like me.
I watch shows for the content, the story, not the picture quality, I watch Dirty Harry blow away the bad guys, don't care if I can count the whiskers on his face while he is doing it :)

Yes, I was watching the NHL finals last night and watching my data meter...then I noticed the resolution setting on the screen and notched it back to low resolution. In the first 25 minutes (second period) it was just about 300 Mb downloaded...after the resolution change I watched the last of the third period in low resolution and only hit 500 Mb total...

So I found that one easily enough...and I know how to reduce Youtube settings...some of the others I will have to keep an eye on...

I'm not too concerned about not seeing the whiskers either...as long as I can see the puck in a hockey game I'm ok...and the Youtube stuff I watch is not about the images either...mostly religious discussions or historical documentary...

I'm sure someone is making a ton of money because most people won't check this stuff...my sister is feeling the squeeze from her Bell account due to usage and over limit fees...I told her to call "retention" and ask for a better deal...
