distributor problem

im having the WORST time getting my 302 distributor to sit back in. ive had it in all the way one time and it took some rolling on the engine stand and a buddy to help lol. problem is i had to take it back out to put the heater hose fitting in the intake since it is right up next to the dist. i have one of those cheap hei distributors, ive got the #1 piston at TDC and the dist stops right at the o ring. the oil pump drive is perfectly centered and everything, its not the o ring that stops it because i took it off to try just out of curiousity. any tips on this?

also, can somebody tell me which wires go to which posts on my ranger starter? i have a 91 that had a 2.3. thanks.
 
Well, little know fact is that there are two different lengths of oil pump drive shafts. For the life of me right now, can't remember if the old 302 had the longer or shorter one for the EFI.

set it in just before it touches the oil pump-it should be engaged in the camshaft gear at this time, turn the crankshaft until it slides in, if done correctly your rotor should still be pointing the right way.
 
Mine was a pain in the A$$ to get in to.
It makes sense what Brutis is saying.........once the cam gear teeth line up with the dizzy it will stay in the right spot when you turn the crank to line up the pump drive and should fall in place.

As long as the cam gear and dizz. gear are correct it doesn't make jack about the drive for the pump. Damn...........that sounds to easy...lol.
 
I had the same problem. The distributor was in and I had to pull it to prime the engine. I worked on getting the distributor back in for over an hour. I had my Dad come over and try it and he had it in a few minutes. It's obviously has a lot to do with the magic touch. I know this doesn't help you out but I feel your frustration. Try greasing the tip of the distributor shaft and the pump drive hole. The EFI distributors have longer shafts, but the pump drive is the same length
 
Kind of on the subject and related but what is the difference between the oil pump shafts M-6605-A302 (for use with 289/302) and the M-6605-B302 for '87-95" 5.0L. Ford catalog says that first one will not fit EEC-IV equipped engines. Really wondering on that one.

Not sure about that, but I'm about to find out, in the reverse order.
('96 Explorer shortblock going in my bro's Gen1 RX7 5.0, replacing a '79 302)

The upper end is longer than the one designed for the earlier engines, but the overall shaft length is the same. The longer upper portion is to mate with the longer distributor shaft of the TFI distributors. You can use either with the earlier short shaft distributors, but not so for the longer shaft TFI distributors.
 
About time someone had a idea but I have one for the early and it's a 5/16" hex the whole length. No one at one of the Mustang sites had a idea either. Thanks
 
The HD drives have a larger middle shank than the O.E. shafts.

When you have the distributorin as far as you can get it, try turning the crank back and forth and the distributor will fall right in.

As far as the starter.... the big wire goes on the same side of the relay on the inner fender as the battery cable. The little wire goes on the opposite post on the relay. Then the big cable goes to the bolt on the starter solenoid and the little wire will go to the smaller bolt or the spade connector if it's set up that way.
 
does it sound like it is hitting metal maybe the oring is a little thicker and needs to be pushed in a little harder or use a thinner oring
 
had the same problem with my msd distributor yesterday when i pulled it to prime the pump took me a good 20 minutes to drop the distributor just use the oil pump primer rod and turn the oil pump shaft a little and keep trying to drop it in and wiggle the rotorback and forth, mine was doing the same thing it would stop just before the o ring but i could look down in and see that the pump shaft was laying off to the side, you'll get it just be patient.
