looking to do a tune up on my 94 2.3 ranger and ran into some plug issues. the ngk plugs I got were too long so i took them back along with one of the plugs i pulled out of my motor. it is an autolite platinum ap764. the guy said they were that autolite was discontinued. and all of the plugs he showed me look nothing like the autolites i pulled out! i ended up getting a set of denso platinum tt part number pt20tt-4512 but have not put them in yet till i get some advice. im worried about the new plugs clipping the pistons. any help would be great

your tuck is still relatively new so you shouldnt have a problem finding alot of choices for plugs your best bet is motorcraft but i used the Autolite Double Platinum APP105 and for the record i never really liked densos

yea there are a ton of choices but the plug i pulled out was only threaded half way up on the plug then there was a flat part the rest of the way. and all the other plugs i checked out had threads all the way up, and some like the ngk's were longer! im just worried about clipping the pistons

even if the plug is only threaded half way up, it's still going to thread into the cylinder until it stops on the gasket. so as long as the 2 plugs are the same length from the electrode to where they make contact with the head it's not going to matter. unless i'm not understanding what your saying.

NGK Plugs

I have access to Amzoil information and I looked up there listing for NGK plugs for the 1994 Ranger 2.3 They are as follows.

GPSERIES TR5GP
IXIRIDIUM TR5IX
PREMIUM PLATINUM PTR5F-11
PRERIUM IRIDIUM ITR5F13

You did not say what plug number from NGK that you first tried to install. I hope this helps.

thanks bryan that was what i was thinking but did not want to screw things up. but as i said about the ngk's they were longer from the "seal" to the very tip that is why i returned them and got a set of denso's that were the same size. but after reading on here i think im going to take the densos back and get some motorcrafts just to be on the safe side. while im there ill see what type of ngk's that were too long that i returned just so noone runs into a problem with them.

like i said thanks a lot for the quick help everyone!!! i really appreciate it!

I don't know who told you that AP764 Autolite's were discontinued, but they're lying. I'm looking at Napa's website right now and it's one of the first plugs on the list for your engine.

was about to say my local walmart has ap764s in stock right now on the shelf. if they are being superseded thats another thing tho.

I just put some autolite xp iridium 104's in my truck. Same plugs for all of the 2.0/2.3/2.5 Lima engines.

The idle is much smoother and the mpg has improved.

The iridium plugs SHOULD last 20k longer then the platinum plugs that should be in the engine.

I replaced my old plugs at 106k and just replaced them again at 161k. I should be able to get 80k out of the new plugs vs the old plugs being worn out at 60k.

Expect to spend about 55$ on plugs. :annoyed:
