disciplerocks's B2 build thread

Dustin, did you hook up the VSS to it, or just the sensor??
SVT

Not driving it today so I'll check it tomorrow.

I hooked up the VSS. Had to tap into it at the t-case because it was the easiest spot to get to.

Now I hope I have enough cash this week to pick me up some DOM.

Also found a guy who will cut and spline the stock t-case shaft down for CHEEP!!!

Dustin, share the wealth, man!! how much is it to cut/mill/respline the shaft??
SVT

I'll let you know after I take it to him next week and he can give me a more exact number.

While your at it, ask him how much to cut/respline axleshafts...
SVT

Also just took the B2 for a cruise to test the OHC. My phone said it was 87 degrees. And the console read between 85 and 89 during the whole drive. The compass was off though. Had to do the drive in a circle thing, but after that it was spot on too.

I wired it to the dome light, but also to the battery so both lamps can work independently without the key.

Sweet, I'll have 3 of those for him to do, and one tcase shaft to machine and spline....Wonder if he does group discounts :icon_confused:
SVT

I'll see if I get a referral discount :D

I would say get a price first and we can put all our parts together for one big discount!!
SVT

Not a bad price to cut and re-spline shafts.

Yeah I dont know what it usually cost. Seemed like a decent price to me. I know the stub shaft is going to be more because it has to be lathed down. Machine shop quoted me at $400 for it earlier in the week.

Did some more research. Toyo Kogyo is made by Mazda. So they are one in the same.

Found this in the tech library

"Well, that depends, if you have a 2.9L Ranger with the Mitsu FM145 Manual trans, the 4.0L will bolt up, but there is not much telling how long it will hold. If you have this trans, swapping to a Mazda M5OD from another 4.0L Ranger is your best bet. If you have the Toyo Kogyo 5sp (86 and 87 2.9L's, mostly 2wds) this tranny should be able to handle a 4.0L, and unless you really, really want to, a swap to a Mazda M5OD is not needed. As for the A4LD, it’s a gamble, since it’s not the most reliable auto in the world. However, they were put behind 4.0L's from the factory, so, its your choice."

And this:

The TK4 has a pretty wimpy reverse. The tk5 is better. I beat the crap out of a TK5 behind a 3.0 in my offroad truck. It has never given me a problem.
I rebuild manual trannies. The TK5 is quite comparable inside to the Mazda.

Sounds like the advantage of an M5OD swap plus more driveline space and a slightly lower gearing.

How did they put a 3.0 on a TK tranny when the 3.0 bellhouse bolt pattern is different the 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0 plus the 3.0 bellhouse cant come off?

I will say that you can find the TK5 trannies on 4wd rangers too. My dads old 84 ranger had one. Be warned that in 85 is when they went to an internal slave so if you want a slave that is easy to swap out, try to find one out of a late 83 and 84. Other vehicles that had these trannies, may be hard to find, are the Aerostars too. I know where one is sitting in a JY hidden with a 2.8 under the hood.

The reverse gear does suck in the TK4. Mine likes to pop out when you get on it hard, but hasnt in mud where the tires can easily spin.
