Disabling steering column lock

1994 Ranger, regular steering column, 5 speed manual transmission.

I am installing a security system that arms/disarms with my cell phone. It also disables the starter when armed.

So my next step is to bypass the ignition switch with a push button start.

Here's my problem, how do I disable the steering column lock, so I don't have to insert a key? I can't find a steering column diagram anywhere on the web. I can't seem to get past the plastic piece on the steering shaft, after the second snap ring.

Any help is appreciated.

IIRC ... there is a plastic lever on the steering column just above the keyway (should be in plain sight). Part of this lever falls into an indent in the steering shaft. It is spring operated. If you disable the spring or remove the plastic lever, the column doesn't lock.

I remember it this way, but I may be incorrect.

Thanks, srteach, but I believe the plastic lever on top of the ignition only prevents the key from being removed, unless the ignition is in the off position.

The steering column lock, seems to be internal in the steering column.

Does anyone have a steering column diagram?

Check with your insurance company before doing anything.

Now isn't that going to bring on the suck if your phone dies, gets dropped, or any of the other minor things that render a cell useless...lol
