5.0 Oil filter to steering clearance

Hey, doing a explorer 5.0 into 1st gen ranger swap. I’m doing a SAS as well, I’m wondering if the oil filter relocation is a necessity because of frame clearance, or just the steering? If it’s the steering I don’t care because I’m reworking it.

If I had to guess at it, I’d say the problem would be that the steering box and the oil filter are trying to share the same space. It’s not a problem on the 98+ since those are rack and pinion. Frame width didn’t change, so it shouldn’t be that. But I’m pretty sure that the steering box could be a problem on the earlier trucks since it hangs about where the filter would land.

As far as I can tell it just hits the steering box. Posts for swaps after they converted to rack and pinion never mentions an oil filter issue. The frame shouldn't be different dimensionally around that time. I'd look to make sure it doesn't bounce around on the mounts and hit the filter still.

steering box. but if you use an over rail or forward box it wont matter.

Explorer 5.0 also had a 90* fitting to divert the oil filter in a different direction too.

I think said fitting might fit in a TTB truck provided it was installed before the engine was installed. I tried to retrofit mine and it was tight enough I couldn't unthread my current adaptor fitting enough to remove it let alone add a different one.
