I have a 2003 Ranger XLT 3.0 with a 5 speed stick. I want to setup a switch to disable the starter if the pickup was broken into. My thoughts were to try and determine which wire that plugs into the clutch safety switch that can be cut and install a toggle switch in that wire to disable.

Does any one know which color wire to loop into the switch, and is this a good or bad idea?

Thanks
Keith

Well, since it's a 5 speed... the chances that someone this day and age that steals cares knows how to drive a stick shift are very slim. You should have to push the clutch in to start the truck, if that is the case, then you can add a momentary switch into that circuit and hide that switch. But with a momentary switch you would have to use it every time you start the truck. An on/off switch you could do the same and hide the switch somewhere to set it when you stop somewhere you want to engage it otherwise you would leave the switch in the on position.

I think there are only 2 wires on the clutch switch. Just tap into either one of those for your hidden switch.

Another easy way is to put a security switch in series with the inertia switch so the fuel pump can't run. Inertia switch is usually on the firewall below the glove box area.

The clutch triple function switch has 6 wires.

2003 Ranger has PATS(passive anti-theft system) so starter motor is disabled without a "matched" key in ignition switch
Fuel pump and fuel injectors are also disabled

So if someone breaks into the cab they can't operate starter even if they break the key cylinder out, or pull out ignition switch under the column
And if they open the hood they could always just jump the starter with a screwdriver or other metal tool
So another hidden switch inside wouldn't help much
And it wouldn't start engine in any case, no injectors and no fuel pump

Manuals used to be easier to steal because you could "bump start"/"push start" them, lol
Just ONE "hot wire" on coil "+" and roll away quietly, then bump start it
Can't do that with automatics
Locking steering wheels took the fun out of that
And now transponder keys(matched keys), really ruin it for car thieves

A smart car thief wouldn't want to deal with PATS
A dumb car thief wouldn't know how to start it

If you are determined to do it then on the clutch switch there will be a Pink/white wire(or white/pink), AND a pink wire, they are next to each other on the switch at one end
These two wires are connected together when clutch pedal is down(switch closed), allows starter activation
If you were to put a switch on EITHER wire that would disable starter motor activation
So cut ONE of these wires and put a switch in between the two ends
Either wire only carries about 1/2 an AMP, 0.5A, 500mA, so doesn't need to be a high AMP rated switch

In 2003 Fuse 24 in cab fuse box powers the starter activation circuit

I've got to stop trying to answer these things when I'm at work and don't have an EVTM to look at.

Who put all those wires down there anyway?

I didn't really think this through. With the PATS system along with the steering wheel locked, its probably not going anywhere. I usually always try to over complicate things (according to my wife).

I appreciate all of you taking time to respond!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is what you need for car alarm systems
