'90 ranger with '86 turbo coupe engine using DIS from '90 engine using one coil pack.
Now for the problem... was driving on friday (on my way to go wheeling) and it was misfiring really bad, sounded like spark, then it just died, was stuck there for about 3 hours. In that time I swapped the coil pack with the spare I had, wasn't it. I'm ruling out fuel problems because there was pressure, and when my VAM died a few months ago I was able to get it into a couple of different limp modes with no success, no fire at all. After the 3 hours it finally started and ran, got it home with bouts of misfires but not as bad as what caused me to be stranded. I figured it was an overheating ignition module so when I got home I swapped on my spare with the same problem (100 yards from my house it died again). While I was stranded the first time I took the crank pulley off (just the pulley part) and looked at the crank sensor and it looked fine, but got to thinking that the wiring could be questionable, when I changed sensors a year ago I spliced it on, I thought I soldered and heat shrink'd it but I could be wrong. I was pulling codes when I was stranded, but was getting weird stuff, will pull again soon.
next thing to look into is crank sensor, will look into that either today or sometime after work this week. Anyone else have ideas? the ignition system with this setup is pretty simple and I've eliminated almost everything...
