I came across an '89 scorpio 2.9 L engine and I am removing accessories from my blown engine in the truck ('90 supercab) and putting them on the merkur engine. I need to take out the dipstick tube & I have no clue . . . I tried to gently pull it out but no luck . . . I quit before I broke it . . . what is the best way to do the swap? BTW both engines are out & sitting next to each other. Thanks in advance.
PS- The donor engine sat for 10 years, I pulled off a valve cover and noticed semi-solid oil gumming up the works, it looks solid till I touch it, more like a paste. What do I need to do to the engine to prevent disaster upon start up & yes the fly wheel does turn over.

the dip-stick tube should be just a wedge fit type thing....maybe take the pliers/channel lock/vise grip....grip the dip stick tube firmly , but not crushing it, see if you can get some twist action going....as you twist , tap up ward with a hammer , hitting the pliers/channel lock/vise grip.

as far as the gunk on the top side , under the valve cover (VC)....clean it up the best you can...do a compression check and leak down on the donor....The gunk maybe past signs of "snot" what happens to when coolant and oil try to mix.

It depends on what the history is on the donor?? it sat for 10yrs hmmm why?
can't say that the mer scorpio 2.9 were as plagued with cranked heads as the American counter parts or not. IDK

Also depends if how much $$$ funds you have to throw at it too??
if you don't mind removing it again, if it doesn't run well at first to get at something more in depth. then drop it in and go. obviously, if funds are not a issue and you want to go for the unique, in that you have the scorpio engine ..just overhaul it now.

as long as it is out.....it MUCH easier to work on it now ...then after it is back in the truck. IMO but you're probably already aware of that.

If I were in your position....and wanting something unique...and tring to watch the funds too.....might not hurt to just replace the head gaskets while it is out...this way you get a better picture of what is on the inside and get the heads checked for cracks. Also...drop the pan and check/ replace the bearings/oil pump too....again that is what I'd in all likelyhood do...doesn't mean that is what you have to do, just suggestions.

Now if you're just tring to get this back on the road as economically as possible, forget being unique....I'd look for a 4.0 donor and do the swap that way....in all things considered dollar of dollar spent...this would yield the most "bang for the buck". again just suggestion.

On my 88 the dipstick is mounted with a bracket attached to the exhaust bolt. the rest of it is an o ring fit into the block which tends to glue itself to the block after 20 + years. I know nothing of the scorpio engine.

The scorpio 2.9L is still the same "cologne" family engine, just the components are mounted differently. Thanks for the input, funds are tight, I called a junk yard to see if the scorpio had any problems, and its just a matter of changing accessories and hangers. I have looked at both engines and noticed that they are basically the same.

If I change all the accessories (electrical/harnesses and such) could I just use my ranger ECU ? Just wondering, called junkyard again and mentioned it was scorpio ECU only . . . doesn't make sense . . . at least to me if I switch ALL the accessories off of my dead donor engine.
