Hi, I have a problem with a 97 ford ranger XLT 2.3L. There is a low grinding sound coming from the rear axle and you can just feel the resistance when driving. I was told it's probably the differential. Per the door tag code for the axle (87) the axle specs are as follows:
description = open 7.5"
capacity = 2750
ratio = 4.10
I've looked into rebuild kits, replacing the whole axle an option to just replace the differential. What I don't know is what to replace. Is there possibly anything that may need to be done other than rebuilding the differential (since we've driven it a few hundred miles while it's had the grinding issue). I'm hoping driving it hasn't caused other problems. Also, does anyone know about how many hours the repair (depending on what replacements are made) would usually take? Thanks for your time.
