Difference between 92 4.0 and a 99

Whats the Differance between a 92 4.0 and a 99 4.0? The engine in my 99 is blew up and I have one out of a 92 explore. Will it bolt up are the acc and fuel inj the same?

i cant remeber off the top of my head the full stats of my responce but theres something thats like 90-94 works together but after you cross that gap it wont work but ide google a engine pic of the to and if you know a thing or to about them you can see the differences in the two
 
First off the '92 is an OBDI and the '99 is an OBDII so the sensers are different.

The '92 has an aluminum intake (can be ported and polished) and the '99 is plastic (cant be)

As long as the '99 is a OHV not a SOHC (as of '97 ford made both) everything else I'm pretty sure is interchangible. If dropping a '92 into a '99, just swap the short block and heads, keep all your sensers and manifolds off the '99. I'm still trying figure out if the OBDII sensers will work on the aluminum intake.

The OBDI and OBDII are correct as they started stricter emissions testing, the heads, intake, computer, sensors and basically the top end was all changed.

However most rangers until 2000 still got the OHV motor not the SOHC motor. In 97 they switched the explorer pretty much exclusively to SOHC.

In my 1991 ranger had a bad engine I payed a shop to find me one they found a 1997 explorer with only 19,000 on it on the 1997 they had 4 censers that mine did not have and they wore blocked off one was the Knox censer i think in 1997 they had a distributor in the explorer and had the use a freeze plug to block it off and the crank censer is on the back of the engine instead of the front let me know if i'm right or wrong it was replaced in 1995 mine is a extend cab XLT with a 5 speed with tow package with the 8.8 rear i'm in Calif if your close you can come look I have a 2000 4.0 on the ground i can take pictures mine has the plastic intake on the 2000 but have the alum on my 1991

99's if it was a flex fuel you will most likley have a job ahead of you. Harness, intake and exaust will most likley need to be swapt. I know on a 3.0 that is the case. Did my little bro's 99. I should have drove the 300 mile round trip to get the exact match for all the monky business it took to make a 95 motor work. Little bro has no clue what a pain in but it was....what we do for our family
 
No, it wont work. The early blocks did not have all the same motor mount holes as the later blocks. The newer block can go in to an older truck, but in 95+ the block was cast a little different.

To put newer mounts on an older block (90-94):
2 of the drivers side holes line up. If you drill the bracket for a 3rd bolt, that should be strong enough.

1 of the pass side bolt holes line up, there are no other bolt holes that line up. There are no holes in the block that line up enough to just drill the motor mount bracket. You would have to make an adapter plate:

The bracket above is my homemade adapter plate. 3/16" plate. Its drilled to bolt to the 90-94 block and to "adapt" the 95+ mounts. 1 bolt goes through the motor mount bracket and adapter, into the block. 4 bolts go through the adapter into the block. 2 bolts go through the motor mount bracket and adapter,but not into the block. I welded nuts onto the back of these hole, to make it easier to install.
 
also the 99 is an electronic distributor w/ the cam synchro gear where as the 94 should have still had a distributor i believe.

4.0l's never had a distributor.
