My 2.9 in my 87 ranger need to be replaced. I have a line on a 2.9 out of a 90 ranger. I know there are differences, but what do I need to change to make it work? Computer?

Thanks,

The long blocks are pretty much the same.

'87 had EGR and '90 did not. Basically, you would want to put the entire '87 upper intake plenum on the '90, use the '87 exhaust manifolds, and knock sensor will need to be installed on the '90 as well.

could you leave the EGR off and install it in the '87?

If you swap the ENTIRE emissions system along with it, yes.

It's quite a lot less work to just swap long blocks.

You aren't under the impression that you're going to get performance from that, are you? EGRs close at WOT. And you LOSE performance when you start detonating.

I was under the impression there was some difference in the heads or something. I know that the rebuilders list one long block for 1986-88 and a separate long block for 1989-1992. I think it has something to do with bolt sizes on accessory mounts.
