difference between 28 & 31 spline 9 inch

how can you visually tell the difference between a 18 spline and 31 spline 9 inch rear axle without taking it apart??

Not sure on the size, but the tubing is different sizes, as the 28 spline is the small bearing 9", 31 spline is the big bearing size...I believe the 31 spline tubing is either 3" or 3.25" diameter....
