I would, is it the turbo or non turbo??

+1 on that.

We have the turbo version and its a peppy little bugger. As long as you have low enough gears it will crawl over anything.

Its easily worth that much if the condition is that good. You have to watch out for the head warping or cracks but newer, and updated heads are available ($$$). Head problems rarely happen unless there is good reason however.

There is a guy here that runs the mitsubishi / dodge Ram50 with all sorts of nice upgrades on it. The 2.3 turbo diesel that was offered in rangers from 1985-1987 is in fact a mitsubishi 4D55-T engine from the astron family. 86 Hp stock but it moves well just the same due to the wide torque range and efficient turbocharger.

If however its non turbo, then its the perkins/mazda all iron engine with an earth tickling 59 Hp. I heard they are tough enough to survive turbocharging but no personal experience with them. It is also a tough engine fron what I understand though.

Aside from power difference, an easy way to identify the 2.3 turbo is to look for the turbocharger on the passenger side of the engine, the aluminum head, and note that this is a side flow head, while the 2.2 non turbo is a cross flow.

if it were closer id jump on it....i love those things

THATS NOT STOCK ANYMORE!!!

The engine could be stock but look closer and he seems to have fitted an intercooler. Diesel rangers never came with them but the 2.3 turbo diesels all beg for one. 86 Hp assumes no intercooler. With intercooler and a slight tweak of the fuel screw, 90-100 is within reach.

The only possible risk is if he was playing with the truck and abusing it with the power updates. However if he wasn't nuts with it, and the intercooler was installed properly, that little thing should be able to lay some rubber and will last better with lower EGTs.

Its also rare to find a diesel with factory 4x4 already equipped. I would definately have a look at it if you can afford the $1500 price.

If you're not buying that... I'm loading up the truck and going to get myself a diesel Ranger.
