diesel ranger convertions?

if ur going to install any chevy v-8 diesel or cummins i-6 diesels u better box the frame.#1 there not made to handle that kind of weight , but there also not built for 350+ foot pounds of torque, they pretzel. i know a guy that put a v-8 chevy diesel and drove it twice the third time he drove it down his runway and snapped the frame, when we pulled the body off the frame was a fucking pretzel.

My 2 cents .. my old man has a dodge cummins and it has appr. 800,000 miles original motor trans 5 spd just went out., and he replaced the injection pump front end and lots of tires. . so yes the fuel is more and yes u can buy a shitbox ,I have one also. If u can get a diesel I say the cost over time is well worth it.

800k,,,, ever have the head off ???

Of all the diesel swaps the only one that seems rational for RBV's
are the 4BT Cummins swaps using the Windsor bellhousing parts.

The 6BT is just too damned long.

Frankly, I've lived with 4cyl Diesels before, I've had a Toyota with their 2.4liter "L" Engine
and I've had a Nissan with an SD25, you kinda expect them to vibrate.

I picked up a 2.3 L Mitsubishi Turbo-Diesel out of an '86 Ranger last fall and stuffed it in my Dodge D50 Ext cab 4x4. The idea was to see what these engines are really like before I drop one into my '04 Ranger.
After 6 mths of runnin the Mitsu, I am looking for one to convert my Ranger. It wont bolt up to my 5 spd auto, but I'll either make an adapter plate or just get a tranny from an older Ranger, as they bolt right up.
At first the thing was a dog, but after turning the pump up, it will run with any 2.9. Parts arent exactly "readily available" but if you know where to look, its not bad. The mileage is unbelievable. I'm not a fast driver, and with the 5 spd std. I get 45 mpg Can. hiway.
The downside to all of these conversions is, it costs a couple grand to do it. Depending on the miles driven, it may or may not pay.

Tempos used to run a 2l mazda diesel. I know because I have one out back with 70,000 km on it but the shock towers are shot

I have an 87 2.9L 4x4 5spd, would the tranny in that be able to handle a 4BT Cummins? Would the 4BT get better gas mileage than one of the Mitsubishi diesels that were in rangers?

no, the 4bt cummins has at least 300 ft lbs of torque and it would destroy that tranny. best tranny to use which may cost a pretty penny would be the nv4500 5 speed. its expensive but worth it

a zf 5 speed would also work

What if I swapped the engine and tranny out of a old diesel Mercedes or something?

Fellas, don't over look the NV 3550. These came in Jeeps '01 and up 6cyl. A lot of guys are swapping them into early Broncos (66-77) and running them behind V-8's with no problem. They are considerably lighter and smaller than a 4500 but still capable of handling a good bit of torque and H.P.

Run with a 2.9? you are kidding right?

The Mitsubishi turbo diesel has a whopping 86hp and there isn't all that much room to "turn it up" to have a prayer with keeping up with a 2.9.

Frankly I've driven a 2.3Turbo-Diesel (factory installed in a Mitsubishi)
and wasn't that impressed.
It was kinda "Breathy" compared to the 80HP I was getting from
my all cast iron gear driven injector pump Nissan.
that was the engine I wanted to add a turbo to...

While I owned a 1982 SR-5 Toyota Diesel (62hp)
I test drove a toyota turbo-Diesel(2L-T engine 93hp!) being sold
by a friend of a friend and agreed to buy it,
but at the last minute the owner sold it to a friend of his.
IF I had gotten that truck you'd have never heard of me
because my NOT buying it led directly to getting my Ranger supercab.

while some diesels feel "unstoppable" because of their low end torque
Horsepower is horsepower and whoever has more is the winner.

But the Mitsubishi 4D55 Turbo-diesel only cranks out 129ft/lb

The Little diesels also don't make the 170ft/lb you'd get from a 2.9
so they'd lose there too.

the 355ft/lb of a 130hp Cummins 4BT is another matter,
but that's a 3.9liter turbodiesel.
but the 4BT weighs in at 745lbs...
