I may have found a 2.2 Perkins out of an '83 Mazda B Series. My question is, how much would it take to drop that engine in my truck? Engine mounts work? Will my M5OD bolt up to it? My truck is a base model so i don't have to screw with power steering, A/C, cruise control or any crap like that.

There's lots of guys out here but I think you've asked one of those questions that nobody knows. I would guess no, but a guess is worth nothing, sorry.

Anything is possible...just depends on how much time, effort and money you're willing to sink into it. Just like anything else really.

Now as for what needs to be done to accomplish this, I have no clue. A good fabricator may be able to guide you on fitment issues

That engine was a factory option for rangers so one would think it wouldn't be too hard, i just need specifics of putting one in place of the gasser.

Lots. You will need wire work, fuel system parts, and probably a few other things that I can't think of ATM.

The Perkins mounts should let it bolt into the engine bay.

Lastly, a loud, resounding "No". M5OD will not bolt to the Perkins.

What kind of wiring? There cant be much i would imagine, starter, glow plugs. The rest is all mechanical right? Is there any computer controls on that engine? What about an adapter plate to reuse the trans? Or is the bellhousing detachable to bolt the diesel one on it?

Same questions all apply to the 4D55 Mitsubishi if i can come across one of them.

I don't think there is any computer that controls that engine. There isn't even and "Electronic Engine Controls" section in the wiring manual.

Not sure about an adapter plate, mostly because I don't know if the spline count for the clutch would be the same. Definite no go on swapping the bell housing. The M5OD has a 1-piece case.

as far as i can tell, the 2.2 only came with a 4 speed that had an integral bellhousing.the 4d55 came with a removable bell that bolts to the fm-145.

now one thing that might be hopefull is that aperantly the same 4 speed was used behind the 2.0 gas motor....though i'm not sure if it shares the same bellhousing pattern.

i know there are people on this site who have some experience with the perkins engine, maybe someone will pipe up-but as adsm08 said, getting it into the engine bay and wired up should be easy enough, just the trans question to answer.

Looks like i might have to pass on that engine then. Id really rather have the 4D55 anyway. I just wanna know before hand exactly what needs done to swap it in before i buy one and have a headache of a project. That is, if i can even find one.

the 4d55 is a great engine to swap in....that's what was in my first ranger.

i have some knowledge of this engine and what's needed to get it into your ranger, and there's a guy on this site that goes by the username of '4d55 performance' who has a ton of knowledge about the engine itself and mods to do with it.

Awesome. Id definitely wanna know how to turn the pump up on it. I really wish i could find one. No junkyards around here have one and there are none for sale. Did they use that engine in any equipment? Like tow motors or anything?

Without getting into every detail, what kinda job would it be to put one in my truck? How much extra crap will i have to buy/make?

I know wiring will be nothing, which even if there is some i happen to be pretty good with a test light and crimpers. I got a feeling the trans would be the biggest issue.

Is the guys username actually "4D55 Performance Inc?" I tried to PM him but it said the name you gave me wasn't found.
