i have a 89 ranger 2.9 auto. i just replaced the head gasket and starter and starter solenoid and distributor cap and rotor. it starts hard and runs ok for the most part. i have to give it gas to start but once it starts its pretty much ok. but my issue is when i try to put it in drive it sputters and dies. any suggestions would help alot. thanks

Prolly need to start with getting codes

you can help yourself quite a bit by cleaning/checking grounds and connections

Did it do this prior to the resent repair work? or is it new after the repair work?

im getting no codes and i checked/cleaned all connections as i was putting everything back together so i know that all electrical connections are nice and tight.
it just started doing this after the repairs
also within the past 4 months i changed the fuel filter, O2 sensor, ignition switch, and all hoses.

need to get fuel pressure gauge and see what the fuel pump is producing for pressure

recheck the timing...remember to check this with the spout plug removed

Have you check the knock sensor? It will keep the engine running if it feel vibrations from the engine trying to stall out.
