Finally got the clutch in and truck back together. Started up fine, and didn't run into any problems until we took it for a test spin. Two different problems that I can hardly see being related. First one: When you start to "lug" the engine, although it's more around 1500 RPMs, you can sometimes hear a light grinding noise. No vibrations felt in the truck or shifter, but a slight grinding. Second one: had me, my buddy, and the shop I used to work at totally stumped. The engine will seemingly cut off at exactly 3,000 RPMs ONLY in 3rd gear. Not a revolution before, and won't go beyond 3,000. Second time I did it, I pushed in the clutch and as we rolled downhill the truck died. Friend also got it to do the same thing in 4th gear at 1800 RPMs, just kinda died out and then lurched forward about 10 seconds later.
Only thing we can think of is that since the speedo cable isn't hooked up (new tranny is electronic, old one is cable- haven't swapped out the plugs yet),it's somehow tripping the governor. Seems like a FAR stretch to me, since the truck is set up for gear driven. Never did either of these before swapping in the "rebuilt" tranny from a wrecking yard.
