Stores around here are still going strong. I've got 8 within a 30 minute drive from where I live. It should be noted that from where I live, damn near everything is a 30 minute drive.
That said, I did sorta luck out at the store near work last week. Between my Ranger, the F-250, and dad's collection I had about 10 gallons of oil to dump, probably last Wednesday. I haven;t bought anything at this store in a while because it isn;t the most convenient when I need stuff, but it was the closest to get the oil dumped. While there I checked out the clearance rack as I often do, never know what you;re going to find.
Two key replacement cases for the late '98-'11 (?) Ranger/Explorer/Truckkeyless entry fobs. One complete replacement remote for the same. One complete replacement remote for Kia/Hyundai with programming dongle. Don't recall the model range listed on the last, but it looks identical to my 2010 Forte's fob and will work as a replacement case if nothing else. Below are AA normal prices.
Ranger Case = $20/ea x2
Ranger Fob = $44/ea
Kia Fob = $114/ea
I wasn't there to buy, but spotted the Ranger cases on the way back to dump oil. Figured it was a fluke that they ended up on the clearance rack, but only takes a few minuted to check, so I dug through grabbed all that I could use and walked to the counter. Scans the first, doesn't say anything. Repeats for the other three. Then says Free, Free, Free, and Free. So I said Sold! Almost felt guilty about walking out and not actually buying anything. Almost.
Don't need the Kia one yet, but glad to have a spare for down the road.
Our Ranger cases are curently ok, but some of them are over 20 years old. They're on borrowed time IMO.
I intend to try to salvage the RKE system out of my V8 donor Explorer and see if I can retrofit it into my F-250. It has power door locks, but didn't come with RKE. I want RKE, but do not want a complete aftermarket alarm system, or the cheap remote door lock kits available around. I'd also like to have a Ford truck style remote. (The square three button type, not the flip key.) Problem is that the donor explorer did not have a key fob with it at purchase. It's a Limited so the system is installed, but I wasn;t thinking about using it for anything at the time so didn't care. The replacement fob will give me something to work with there if I can make the system work standalone, if it proves out I can buy another for the spare key set.
