2.0L ('83-'88) Desirability of 2.0 Lima

So I’ve got an old rusty ranger I’m using for parts. I have no need for the engine or the trans (5speed) but don’t know enough about the 2.0 to know if it’s still a desired engine. It still runs well and has no known issues. It’s my brothers old truck and he’s had it for 25 years. My question being is it worth removing and selling or should it retire to the scrap yard. If it’s still a sought after engine I’ll pull it and list it for sale.

That makes more sense.

It sounds like it could be drivable (even if not legally). Sell it for the engine, transmission and parts. Somebody looking for an engine would much rather hear it run, and drive it if possible.

Just scrapping it would be a shame. It's getting harder to find these old trucks, and a lot of their parts.

Depending on year, I think '87-88 (unless in Canada where the 2.0L was offered til '90) it would have an M5OD trans which could be desirable, 2.0L's are all carbed and have like 80hp so not very desirable...

I would guess everybody that has a 2.0 would rather have a 2.3 if not a 2.5...

It’s an 85 2.0 with EFI and a Toyo Koygo 5 speed. 2.0 is same as 2.3. Just not bored out.

I was under the impression that ALL 2.0's were carbureted and 2.3's were fuel injected from 85 on? Are you sure it's not a 2.3?

Most of the 2.0 trucks were long gone before I ever got into RBVs but the few that I have seen all had carbs.

Upon further inspection....... it is a 2.3. Brother told me it was 2.0 so I assumed he knew. Anyhow, I don’t think it changes much about my intent of the question posed. Knowing everything has value based on what ones willing to pay isn’t what I was looking for as much as do fellers find themselves searching these out.
Rusty truck is an eye sore so it needs to go but I will pull the engine and trans and hold on till some lucky soul happens to find it and it’s she gem they been searching for. I never sell my spoils for top dollar. I’ve given several away free on here. I’ll strip other coveted parts as well. Non a/c heater plenum, clutch pedal assemble ect ect.

Good running 2.3's are hard to find. I needed one about 10 years ago and there were just none available at all locally. Ended up just having mine rebuilt. I later parted out a '90 2.3 truck that ran good and sold the engine almost instantly for $300. I would say the engine is definitely worth saving but get compression and oil pressure numbers BEFORE you tear the truck apart - that will help you sell it.

Problem with 2.3's is that there were so many variants that you almost have to find someone who needs an engine that has very close to the same year... 85-88 would be what they are looking for as an exact drop in, otherwise they have to mess with changing heads, electronics, exhaust, etc.

Haven’t given it much thought. I would hate to see it go to waste. I know it’s was a dependable truck when it retired in the driveway. (Still running). I have no clue if it’s the same as 89. You may wanna dig into that a little. It’s still in the truck. $250 to make it worth my while. I live in south central Michigan. May wanna figure that trip as well.

The transmission isn't the same as a '90, they started using the M5OD in '87, and not even much of the engine would be usable on a '90 without some work (adding crank sensor and using the whole intake manifold from the older engine and a few other things...)
