took the head off the 2.3 because i had a couple of burnt valves and i notice the head gasket is blown between the #3 and 4 cyl. so im cleanin the block surface before i put the head on and i notice there is a little notch burnt through where the gasket was blown:pissedoff:, i dont think the gasket will seal it up, is there any way to fix this without snatchin it out to have it decked???

If it is eroded enough that you can feel it, The block is probably history. There is no chance what so ever that a gasket will seal. I've seen it before. Although, If you're feeling really brave you could try to J.B. weld the groove during assembly. It will probably just be a waste of time though.
Good luck!

You can if you really want remove the engine from the chassis, then disassemble the engine (No competent machinist will willingly deck anything other than a bare block)
Then reassemble the engine and re-install it.

HOWEVER since the 2.3 uses a timing belt and the deck height and cylinder head thickness actually affect cam timing...

Basically decking the block will effectively make the belt longer which
will retard cam timing.

And that doesn't adress how deep this "notch" is, if it's more than 0.020" the block is not salvagable.

Try the JB weld, but failing that I think you need a new short block
