So I have a 1996 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0 V6 EFI. I have had the truck since 2006, and in the past year have had a new radiator put in, new waterpump, rebuilt the transmission, new tires and a few other things. Just two days ago the head gasket blew and now there is an array of engine issues. I took it to a trust worthy mechanic and have been quoted 1800-2000 dollars to fix it. I have weighed the decision to either let the ranger die or to repair it and for where I am right now, I think it just makes more sense to repair it. My question is, should I just have the engine fixed or should a new one (used rebuilt one) be purchased. What is your opinion on what I should do?

IMO there is a bunch of things to consider. Condition of body/interior/frame/etc. and so forth. Next, do you like it and want to drive it for the next X years? If you replace it with a used vehicle, are you buying someone else's problems? If you buy a new one the payments will cost about what it will cost fix yours in less than six months and you got another 4 years or so of payments.

So, you got to use your head and maybe a little of your heart. It is your money, you get to spend it your way.
