I have been searching for 4.10 and 4.56 geared axles to swap out my 7.5/3.73 and have only found a few at all the Ohio junk yards (that have search-able parts online). Right now I have 31" tires, but in the future I may go with 33's. So I thought I would look into 4.56 axles, but the only one I found in the state of Ohio was for like $700 at the JY, and it was 3 hours away from where I live.

I have only found two 4.10 axles at 2 different yards (neither LS). One is out of a 95 with 175,000 miles @ $350. The other is out of a 99 ranger with 104,721 miles @ $139, and it is at a JY that is close to me.

Is $139 dollars a good price for a complete 7.5/4.10 rear axle already out of the truck?

I paid C$200.00 for front beams and pumpkin d-28/4.10 and drum to drum rear 7.5/4.10, it was on kijiji.com in Canada. I had to refresh the rear; new seals, new to me brake slave cylinders, and brake lines from one side to the other. If the rear checks out in good shape, I'd say it was a good deal. Is it drum to drum? Even better!

I believe it is complete. Well, I may get it then. I would rather have a 4.56 axle, but it will probably be a year or so before I get bigger tires anyway. Plus, I just called to get an estimate on getting 4.56 gears installed in my axle, and after parts and labor it's around $700. For now, since I only have 31's, $139 sounds much better...

Thanks...

I just called and made sure, it is complete drum to drum. It is out of a 99 ranger with a 2.5L Automatic transmission, and mine is a 95 2.3L with a 5 speed. Will I have any issues at all with compatibility?

I'd GUESS no, but have no experience with those years. Have you checked the tech library; third button to the right under the TRS banner at the top of the page.

where at in ohio? and are you looking for an 8.9 or 7.5? the one you talked about from a ranger is probably a 7.5, you should be able to get an 8.8 for a reasonable price.

I paid $70 for my 8.8 including the core. There are several here with 4.10s.

Yes I have looked at that page multiple times, but the only things I read out of it as far as compatibility are the 93 and up axles are all 2" wider that the pre-93 axles and this: "There is no difference between 7.5 & 8.8 axle shaft lengths provided you stay in the same year window". As far as the spring perches being the same angle or any other thing that could be different it doesn't say.

I have been looking for both. Like I said I haven't been able to find very many 4.10 axles at all.

If your talking about the Evansville area, that would be too far for me (620 mile round trip). It would cost me around $70 to $75 in gas. So even if I got one for $70, I would end up spending around $150.

Which is what I already done. I went and picked up the axle for $139 plus tax (no core).

Is there supposed to be a little bit of play in the gears? If so how much? This axle was only supposed to have 104,721 miles on it and I was just wondering if a small amount of play is normal. Also, the drums are rusted on the inside some, what is the best way to clean them up? I plan on getting new brakes and hardware, and hopefully cleaning up the drums so I don't have to replace them...

Thanks!

There are junk yards around here that sell 8.8's for 150.
I was just there 3wks ago and there were alot of disc brake ones also.

I'm no mechanic, but every axle I've looked at has some play. Looking at the pinion where the drive shaft attaches, I've seen ~1/8" to 3-8" of movement at the outer circumference, the less the better [to a point, it needs backlash].
I'd use a wire wheel on the drums, then some Brake-Kleen. A little bit of a lip is o.k., I'd say up to 1/16", but that is going the cheapest route. If you can afford, price new drums as well as turning them on a lathe.
Good luck,

Richard

damn I got my 7.5 with 4.10 L/S at LKq for 80 bucks...still need a front...

I decided to return the axle and get a refund. The day I got it, they were about to close for the day, and they told me I could get it and look it over at home and if I had any problems with it I could bring it back for a full refund.

I really wanted to go get a 4.10 with a LS or a 4.56, and the 4.10 I bought was so rusty. After getting the drums off, it would have bugged me not to buy new drums. The drums that came with it was extremely rusty. So, then I have the cost of new drums, brakes, brake parts, cylinders, etc. and all of that for an axle housing that was really rusty.

My main concern with the bigger tires and stock 3.73 was pulling my small band trailer. Well I pulled it over the weekend (loaded) and other than starting out on a hill, it wasn't that bad. I decided it would be acceptable to drive it with the 3.73's until I find the axle I really want.

I'd like to get an 8.8 rather than a 7.5...

I'll keep that in mind when I go look at axles. I figured they probably had some slight play in them, but I wasn't sure. I could have used a wire brush, I have a few different sizes for my drill that I used to clean up my rusty old hitch, but the drums were really bad. I will wait, find an axle that is in better shape, and hopefully I will have more money to work with so I can just buy new drums along with all the brake parts.

I'm guessing the axles for the 1st and 2nd gen rangers are cheaper to buy at the JY's?

Thanks for the replies!

I've used car-part.com to find some good ones before. Last one was the 8.8 w/4.10 and 19K miles on it for $400, no drums.
