is there a serial number or vin anywhere on the engine that i can use to date it? its a 2.3 btw.

i'm trying to figure out if my truck has the original engine or not, since the body has 269k on it. the engine seems to run far too well to actually have that many miles... i'm really curious. if it does, i'd be quite impressed.

You shouldn't be surprised if it is the original engine. Mine has 377K miles on it and still runs pretty damn good for its age. Hell, when it was down around 270K it still didn't even use up any oil yet.

+1

sorry i cant help you with your question, but its not at all uncommon for "modern" engines to break 200, or even 300,000 miles.

my red escort has 230,000 miles on it and it really runs great. all original (with reciepts!).

ya, my little 2.3l reads 223,xxx and the odometer has been off about 20% for who knows how long. it's not a race car but the motor stays clean and only burns about a quart per oil change.

forgot to add, with the new power steering pump, the 'scort doesnt use any fluids :icon_thumby:

damn, lol. i had heard you cant kill this things, but i am truly impressed :). makes me kinda scared to rev it high, though...

I gotta get me one of those, gasoline is somehwat expensive!

;missingteeth;

Eh, I shift mine between 4000 and 5000 RPMs constantly. I would shift higher but it just doesn't have any pull over that.

did your gas mileage go down with age, or should i be looking for issues? i dont have a CEL but i'm only getting 20mpg with mostly highway driving. not sure how they usually do...

I only get 18MPG average now. It was around 20-22 MPG back at 270K, maybe 24 MPG on a good stretch. It gets better in the summer and worse in the winter also due to the cold and the winter fuel mix. I seem to get better mileage also if I keep the truck up around 3000 RPMs cruising. It works less to keep going so it doesn't need to use more fuel.

cool, thanks for the info. sounds like i'm right on pace with that... now hopefully it will pass emissions on saturday =o

do a compression test on it. this is a good way to see if your "bad" mileage is just due to a tired engine or if you should expect something higher.

where "should" the compression be? i havent gotten around to picking up a manual for this beast yet.

i do have a compression tester though.

i would like to see around 150-ish with no more than 10% or so between all 4 cylinders. that would be a pretty tight engine.
