dangerranger1983 build

I ordered the 9903 edelbrock, a rebuilt 1403 unit off summit. My truck will see mainly street use but for offroading trial driving, mudding at the most.

Found some pics of the Edelbrock internals.

Notice how the float hangs off the rear of the carb.

This can cause the float to stay open when going up a large incline
or even cause it to stay closed going down one.

A shot of the inside of the bottom, you can see the weights i was talking about and also notice how the accelerator pump is tucked away in the front corner, this can cause the accelerator pump to starve in a severe incline.

once you look at these pics there is one distinct advantage the edelbrock has over the other carbs, do you see it?

the fuel bowl does not have any gaskets lower than the float; this means that there are no gaskets that can spill fuel over the engine. its one peace top design allows for rebuilding without removing it from the engine, although you should for cleanliness purposes.

Food for thought. So how does the offroad kit fix this problem?

I am not exactly sure how Edelbrock took care of there issues. Most extreme off road carbs will have center hung floats or close to it so the angle wont effect the float, and ideally i would want manual secondaries and a accelerator pump that cant starve regardless of angle. as for who makes such a thing? well i am not going to point out favorites but i will say most guys have there preferred carb for this.:icon_thumby:

Actually, what carb would all of the guys out there recommend for Extreme Off-Road use?:icon_confused: i am just curious..

well it is not a kit, but i did find a web forum post describing exactly what would need to be done to the edelbrock to fix it for off road use. it is a long post so scroll down till you start to see carb pictures.

I don't know how you are going to get around it because every float has to hinge somewhere.

It is the nature of the beast, if you don't like it go EFI.

Rock crawler types cuss carbs in general, even the ones made for rock crawling. They just will not compete with EFI on any level for running on an angle.

It is the downside for choosing a stupid simple setup. :dntknw:

My truck is pretty much on the warpath by the time I get CLOSE to thinking about using the secondaries... using them on a trail with a steep angle is asking for trouble anyway. The thought of doing it makes my neck hairs stand up... I know even in my fairly low geared rig you could be indicating 30mph in first if you really got after it. :fie: Maybe that is why I have never had a problem with angles? :icon_confused:

Now I guess that could have been an issue with my 2.8, it had to be 4 low and tightly wound to get to its "happy place", the 302 just kinda loafs along.

On my Holley when the secondaries opened, you would almost sh!t yourself, it would put your head back and the engine would be gaining rpms fast, i can only imagine what it's going to be like having a properly working carb on mine feel like. You wouldn't think 200hp is much, but between the frame rails of a ranger like mine, it's enough to get down the road and fast and other people don't expect that to come from a ranger either when they are driving next to you.

Over all I'm happy with the swap, it's just the devil is in the details and there allot of that.

Let us know when the new Edelbrock comes in! I'd love to see all the work for the swap finally pay off completely!

I will, pictures and hopefully a video of it running and driving too.

The swap will be at minimum done when I'm 4wd.

Next big project will be going to a better trackbar and frame mount along with a different draglink so that my steering wheel is straight again and i can turn the same amount left and right.

I'm told my carb and my draglink came to my parents today. But won't be able to do anything till this weekend. Tools and place to work on it all is at their house.

Got the carb on and drives so smooth, idles, etc...well with the money. Have to get a different air cleaner, my other one hits the fuel inlet.

Found the reason for my back firing. Since my truck can idle now i figured i would let it run in the dark tonight and saw that one of my plug wires is shorting to my header causing the back firing. So guess I'm after some new wires but need ones with 90 degree boots. And also so far, looks like my mileage has got better but don't like the electric choke, doesn't open up all the way even after driving awhile, it is wired up correctly but will get the volt meter and be double sure power is still getting to it.
