dangerranger1983 build

Okay have had this on my mind the last few days but hopefully somebody has an answer.

I have a 91 Mercury grand marqui 302 in my ranger all stock (flat top pistons, e6 heads, etc...) except I put a mustang cam in it putting me at 200hp. Now I know I can put mustang e7 heads and be fine with valve and piston clearances but those heads aren't as easy for me to get but I can the gt40 heads much easier. My question is will the gt40 heads valves clear my flat top pistons or are the e7 heads going to be as good as i can put on?

As for the xmember, got some hardware and hopefully a few more things tomorrow, weather permitting.

if it wasn't for the valve clearance issue, I would get me a set of 351C heads and intake, I was told at the "Hot Rod Barn" in Knoxville, that these would bolt up, BUT I would have to replace my pistons for a set with cutouts for the valves.

This would in turn make my 302 into a 302 boss, or at least that is what i was told.

The boss has from what I remember, 4 bolt mains and structural webbing on the inside of the block.

Im going for cheap and easy bolt ons and heads and cam are some of the easiest.

If I had the money, I would start with a fresh block, all forged internals, pedestal roller rockers, etc...you know, what everybody wants a 302 to be like...a stroker 347 supercharged lol..but right now, just keep it simple.

no....not a boss....clevor yes...boss....no.

302 blocks explode at 500 hp spinning near 7 grand at times where a boss block will run for 5 seasons at 800 hp and 8 grand plus at high rates of time.

today....right now in this time, i would buy a 750 dollar 5.3....add another 750 bux to it and spank a 5000 dollar that i have built 347. i hate that it is that way...but it is that way. how anybody can even consider a 5.0 windsor swap in this time is beyond my ability to understand:dunno:

marvelous times we live in. it is the good old days, you should capitalize on it when you have the money and desire to increase power and efficiency.

only thing i know for sure things will change again...better or worse i couldnt know, but there will be a setup that makes more sense sooner or later.

the new 5.0 is wildly awesome though.... it had some serious thought and capacity put into it....the compromises were a bummer but thats not stopping it from being a rival to the ls by far...my biggest bitch was bore spacing......i am sure when your ready to build power the price of those will be too good to pass up. and going ls would look like a less obvious answer...

i see good low mile units under 3500bux occasionally now.....and i catch my self drooling when i do see them. i would pick one up for sure if they were equal in cost and setup to a ls engine.

if you would have went ls from the get you would have had real power and economy for probably close to what you got into your rig now. and none of the issues with tuning. just a good, quiet, 17 mpg, donut burning, tire frying even at a 30 mph roll, fun ...or maybe frightening ride.:icon_confused:maybe

I just love having a 5.0. Many options for it such as transmission, internals, heads, aftermarket, etc...plus very easy to work on.

Sure there are better engines out there that can spank mine all day long with half the displacement but they just are as, don't want to put it this way, old school. I don't like a perfectly smooth idling engine or a quiet one, I like to feel it idling and hear it all the time.

Sure an ls can get you down the road, but it doesn't have the same feel and sound at 5 grand either. There is just something about my 5.0 screaming to the next gear that puts a grin on my face and a "oh shit" look on peoples face when I'm passing them.

Good thing about my setup is had good lie end torque. Bad part, she drops off at the higher rpms, gets there a little fast for my liking. Been thinking about some 3.08s in my axles.

objectivity and intellectual honesty.

your specific engine setup verse a stock late 5.3 with your same exact exaust you made....that you are listening too now.

hey!....i love the sounds i can get from fords. especially 351's

a well built or rather a properly built 400 m with crappy flowing flomaster mufflers sounds evil....awesome evil.

a hot cam 390 with flo pros is beautiful music to my ears.

my favorite noise is from mopar... a stroker 340 with x pipe into 3 in dynomax weldeds....oh yeah.

all of that aside, i was inferrinng you could have a quiet tire frier.

if you like loud, the ls has a sound that is crazy and definitely intimidating compared to what you have now with what you have.

I got a little chuckle from the flex pipe exhaust. I've used that stuff before and hated it.

The flex pipe was a quick thing and I was running out of time due to I find out I was going to be a dad. But I am going to redo it sometime.

Anyways got started on my xmember, got the frame bracket modded and mounted. Still have a ways to go but some progress is better then none.

I really like this truck.
Keep it up

Thanks.

When I first was building this truck I was going for a mudder/trailer driver that I cutoff beat on and what not but as time went on building her, putting money into her, etc... I realized I didn't want to be breaking stuff, abusing her but just want a reliable DD that I can go have fun with and all do everyday personal needs.

Getting her back to 4wd will be my last major project for awhile and then I will be focusing on the small maintenance things on her.

Right now I'm reaching that stage where I don't want to work on her as much but I just want to enjoy what I have worked on for so long.

Yeah I'm with you on that! I'm kinda burned out on workin on mine too. Just been tinkering with her lately.

Very nice. Thats one reason I like yours. You have tons of sweat and blood in that thing.

We went opposite ways in the planning haha. Mine was a nice reliable DD and weekend wheeler. I went wheeling a couple times and got addicted. I got a few huge dents, then I got a free FW D44 housing and a really good deal on TSLs. So I did the SAS, wheeled the hell out of it and now its a trailer queen... I really miss driving it on the road. Especially when I see a shinny lifted 4x4 that clearly doesnt get used (like a Rubicon).
But mine will be back on the road someday! I miss it too much. I need some power before I get back on the road though.

One day I will get her out and wheeling and catch the bug and start breaking stuff (hopefully not). I do see myself upgrading to either fw or eb d44 and 9 inch out rear. Plus the good part is those axles are already geared for the engine/trans I have. Only thing is using the long arms for the d44, that it's something I will have to figure out.

As for power for you, I think a 5.0 will do. As for trans, if going for DD, zf5. If not, np435. And for transfer case, the np205 with the dual stick mod.

302/435/205 is my plan. Right now I cant hold 45-50 mph. Even with 5.13s. 60-65mph would be nice. It would be nice to be able to drive it to farm parties and stuff like that. The 2wd dually doesnt like those situations :icon_rofl:. I dont need DD capabilites as I have a car for that since I drive 100 miles a day. A 435/205 will give me the gearing I want. All I need is time.
