Will I be able to use the original carriers with the lower gear sets, such as 4.88?

3.55 is the carrier break for the TTB D35. There is no carrier break in the 8.8.

Was gonna rep you for answering to the point quickly but.... I gotta spread love first. More people need to be rep worthy lol

I have 4:88's in my D35 in my Explorer (it had the 3:73's though) Nothing bought extra for it. The 8.8 had the factory limited and had to buy and open carrier for the locker...

Yeah he's right. My d35 came with 3.27's and I put 4.56 in it. There is no carrier break.

IIRC the HP solid axle 30s and 35s used by Jeep did have a carrier break around 3.55:1, but the TTB 3rd member used by Ford does not have a carrier break.

Well shit, I was mis-lead then. Guess you learn something new everyday. My apologies.

Good to know & thanks to everyone's input, the explorer donor has
3.73 so I was in the clear either way. I have the LS
In the 8.8, what locker did you go with and how do
you like it? I would really like to to put arb's front &
Rear just hard to drop a couple thousand in lockers..

I'm not 100% sure about that. I think I saw Junkie post that somewhere before.

Arbs are sweet.

For a lunchbox locker(Spartan, Aussie, Lockrite) you will need an open carrier.

I just went with the Lock-Rights in my Explorer, but have the Detroit in my Ranger (another 8.8 Explorer axle with 4:56's)The Ranger and Explorer axles are different though. The Ranger is 28 spline and the Explorer is 31. The D35 are all the same spline count)

As far as the Lock-Rights go, I have never had an issue out of them. Heres a one pic of me wheeling m Explorer....

so yes it gets used. The ARB's would be the way to go if you can afford them. Snow and ice can be a pain sometimes, but not unmanageable (with using caution)...

Mine came with a Detroit and I'll use one again in any axle. It works period without fail. I have yet to see one break although I know it is possible but you can buy individual parts of they do.

Thanks guys, I like to here about tried and tested parts, it definitely looks as if your explorer is capable, as many rigs on this site. I am going to look into the lockrites some more...

I put a mini spool in my 8.8 and it does great and it's cheap, as long as you don't mind having it locked all the time.
