I’m in the middle of installing 4.56 gears in my ranger. I have a Dana 35 from an explorer. I went to rockauto and ordered a ring and pinion for a 94 explorer from Dana SVL.

The gear cut is backwards!! How can this be?
In the pictures I have the new ring and pinion installed and I’m holding up the old.

I bet the old is for TTB and the new is for SLA. They are different tho both are Dana 35. I believe 1 is high pinion and the other is low pinion.

I thought all 94 4wd explorers had TTB?
I went to amazon and found the same Dana gears with the same part number. It too said it fits 94 explorer. When I looked at questions posted the seller stated that it would not fit TTB.

Then the catalogue listing is wrong. Explorer went to SLA in 95. Tho there may be some overlap with 94 late. Sorry, other than contacting them I don't know what to suggest.

Ttb Dana 35 is reverse rotation. In a lot of gear catalogs it is referred to as an AMC reverse rotation 35.

The listing is wrong, almost every gear set listed for the 1st gen Explorer D35 on rockauto is for a rear axle D35 such as those found in Jeeps. If you search ring & pinion under 1991 Ford Ranger 4.0 on rockauto it only list one manufacture that makes gears for the D35 TTB which is USA Standard Gear with ratios from 4.11 to 5.13 (3.55 out of stock & no 3.27s, 3.73s, or 4.10s even being listed) with prices ranging $240-$300.

Well this is extremely frustrating! This is not the first time rockauto has had the wrong product listed. And their return process is horrible! They have asked me for the vehicle vin number to prove that the part doesn’t fit. I’m sure most of y’all are like me upgraded parts from all kinds of late model fords. :dunno:

This is why I only order gear stuff from RRP.

is there a part number on the old ring gear? that can be cross referenced to what axle you have to help explain the situation.

Yep, they sent you a standard-cut D35 gearset. As said, you need reverse-cut (a.k.a. reverse spiral, reverse rotation).
