Hopefully someone will chime in here

1.) I know I need to make set up bearings out of the old bearings. (and I know that the preload needs to vary between new and old bearings. Approx 6-8 lb/in on old bearings and approx 10-14 lb/in on new bearings, properly oiled)

Questions.

1.) Should I immediately install my NEW bearing races for the pinion into the housing or continue using the old ones with the setup bearings?

Anything else you think I should know, post it up.

Are you using a crush sleeve or an eliminator kit? I cant remember off the top of my head where the pinion spacers are.

I'd keep the bearings & races together. Unless they're the same brand, who's to say there could be a slight difference in their fitment tolerances, knocking your measurements off.

That said, I haven't ever used setup bearings on any axles I've done (a proper-sized bearing splitter & press takes 'em on & off like nothing at all).

Far as I know there are no crush sleeves in the D44's. Only shims.

Bump folks. I'd love to get some more info on this.

I would use new bearings for your setup bearings. The old ones are probably worn.

Never had the difference between a new/old bearing make a noticeable difference to the set up.

Always start off with the shims you took out and go from there. You usually end up fairly close to where you need to be.

Good to know. Thanks folks. I'll be trying this in 2 weeks.

x3...

Good luck!

Has anybody used set up races for the inner pinion bearing? I would think it would be a good idea. Would save time setting pinion depth. Would there be any ill effects by doing this?

I do the carrier and pinion bearing. On my 60 I also did the pinion race as there are shims behind it as well.

Okay, there were also shims behind the race on my D44. I figured that might be a good idea.

Thanks.

It sure makes it easier in the long run.

when me an holyford 86 did my d44 we did set up bearings ... sanded the insides untill i could drop them over with ease on the pinion and on the carrier... we started with stock shims and was almost Perfect first time.. had some slight adjustments and ones we got the right combo we pressed new ones on.. i set up old bearings with the new races didnt make much of a difference.. theres shims behind the carrier bearings which make it a pain sometimes. .
