Does anybody know if they make a gear set taller than 3.07 for the dana 44 axles? I am trying to find something in the 2.49 - 2.56 range but am not seeing them available.

Thanks

why the hell would you want that tall of a gear set?

As far as I know, 3.07 is the highest but I could be wrong. If you swapped in either and 8.8 or a 9" you could find taller gears.

my waggy d44 came with 2.92 or something close to that IIRC. Im prett sure I might still have the gear set too. (D44 hybrid portals)?

I thought about that, but I also would like to run a high pinion. If I did then I would be shelling out a bit more cash for Hi9 third members.

Shh...don't tell them that, it was supposed to be a secret.

I haven't fully decided, finding the gear sets will tell me if its even worth pursuing to the next step.

Lol, saw it coming as soon as you asked for a ratio like that....

I'll see what I can dig up for other possible diff's to use...

old 8" rearends came with 2.73's. Depends what kind of strength you're looking for, although it shouldn't be much of an issue behind the reduction....

Mine had 3.0 in it stock. There's gotta be some numerically lower out there.

why not go with an off the shelf portal? Like a Mog 404's or Volvo 303's.

Volvo's : 6:1, vacuum actuated lockers.

the volvo's arent very strong. 404 would be a better choice. Or 406/416 depending on truck/tire size.

If hes thinking of using a D44 center section I doubt hes going that big with it. (I do realize that the reduction at the wheels takes alot of stress off the center section) Volvos will stand up to 40" tires or so.

But I do agree if I were to go with portals a 406/416 set would be what I would go after. seen way to many 404 portal housings break. volvos have always appealed to me cause I wanted to build a YJ with no lift and just a set of C303's with a set of 35's or so.

I don't know much about the Volvo or Uni-mog axles other than they have portal ends that I would like.

Anybody have good suggestions for sites I could read through about them, or know the gear set and portal reduction values?

At the moment I was looking to run 35" tires, but that will also depend on the portals too.

Good information in that link, thanks! :icon_thumby:

The Volvo type axles are about what I was expecting for weight (also closer to what I was looking for gearing), the Uni-mog axles are quite a bit of girth.
