I bought this axle from someone already disassembled and I am dropping it off tomorrow to get regeared and I just noticed this
driver side:

So how toast is this axle?

I THINK it so the oil can get back outta the bearing. Kinda a drainish thing.

It is not an oil drain...The seal lives there, if there's oil draining back from there I'm sure there are bigger problems. What it is for is actually the vent. Directly on the outside of the pumpkin from that groove should be a threaded hole for the vent. Be sure to have this cleaned out before you start putting things together (don't try to seal it up with rtv or silicone).
 
You can clearly see the seal in the pictures.......
I could be wrong about it being a drain, but it is NOT where the seal goes!
I forgot bout the vent, i think your right there.
