Ok so i am really new to this and tried to read the stuff in tech library on the swap but got kinda confused. Is there anything else i need off of an 96 explorer besides the axles it's self? And what is the easiest way to figure out if it is a true d 35? Also what would be a good price on one? Any tips or advice on the swap would be great to. Thanks

first off, don't even look at the front axle of a '96 explorer as it's completely different!

The front axle from a '91-94 explorer 4x4 are all Dana 35 TTB axles, '90-92 ranger 4x4's are all real D35's, and all 4.0L and most 3.0L 4x4 rangers from '93-97 will have a real D35. The easiest way to tell the difference is to look at the pumpkin, a real one will have fins, a hybrid will be smooth, and both have 10 bolts holding the pumpkin to the suspension beam.

They're pretty much a direct bolt in other than the driveshaft unless you swap the driveshaft and transfer case from the donor vehicle, that's what I did...

^x2 except I just had my driveshaft shortened. Cost $40.

the slip joint in my T case was THRASHED, and I found a couple manual 1354's for $75 each, $35 for the shaft from the junk yard...

as far as cost for axles, I usually pull my own and they go for $100-120 at the U pull yard. you can usually find better deals on craigslist from private parties parting out explorers with bad A4LD's...

Ok thanks guys that is a huge help! :icon_thumby: The search is on!
