Dana 35 TTB

This truck is still kinda new to me. While on the trail I felt something catching in a deep part of the path. I'm pretty sure it was the housing on the front axle. I found out it's a TTB style front end. I thought the front casing was just some kind of protector plate but later learned about the mechanics of a TTB. I still haven't got it down 100%. Is there a product out there to better protect this front axle? Luckily I was just in mud, but I could only imagine what a rock would do to this axle. I've seen a few skid plates online, anyone ever tried one? Is there an easy way to find more ground clearance other than bigger tires? I read something about using washers to raise, as long as there are enough threads left on a certain point? Not sure what this is yet. Also is there any maintenance that can be done to all the moving parts on this TTB? Any greasing available?

The housing itself it fairly tough. I have beaten on mine severely at times and have never had an issue with broke axles (I run 35's/ and 36's on my rigs). the pumpkin (what holds the differential) is aluminum, and somewhat weak, but is protected by the steel housing. They will take abuse. Most broken axles are from binding/severe abuse or big tires (im pushing the limit on mine).
Not much in the way of more clearance other than bigger tires. Not enough material to shave and still protect the pumpkin. Any skid you put on them will actually lower your clearance (has to be put on the bottom of the housing). Some have added some metal to the front of the housing to help it skid over things.
Like I said earlier though, they will take a beating.
